Depending on the rules of the game, the high card can break ties. For example, if two people have four of a kind with the same rank, a high card will break the tie. However, the same is not true for a pair of kings.

One final rule to remember when playing poker is that you are never to bet more than your ante. This rule is especially important in cash games where the bets are made directly into the pot.
